Volume and audio: How we measure

It is not uncommon for us to hear in our consultations that the drives are to be installed in bedroom windows that are even to open or close the window in automatic mode during the night. This is just one example of the fact that it makes perfect sense to take a closer look at the subject of noise development.

While it is largely irrelevant in a production hall how loud a drive motor for a skylight dome is, it certainly plays an important role in the living area.

On the one hand, we measure the sound level - i.e. the loudness - in our house under always the same conditions, and on the other hand, we also make high-quality audio recordings of the real operating noise. Surely you can imagine that a quiet rattle and clatter can be more annoying than a somewhat louder steady hum.

Sound level

You will find more and more often on our products the indication "sound level" (On the product page under additional information). The following table gives you a brief overview of the sound pressure level, which is given in dB and always refers to a distance of one meter from the drive in our measurements:

Noise - Sound sources Examples with distance Sound pressure level in dB
Jet aircraft at a distance of 30m 140
Pain threshold 130
Discomfort threshold 120
Chainsaw at 1m distance 110
Disco, 1m from loudspeaker 100
Diesel engine, 1m away 90
Edge of a traffic road 5m 80
Vacuum cleaner at 1m distance 70
Normal speech at 1m distance 60
Normal apartment, quiet corner 50
Quiet library, general 40
Quiet bedroom at night 30
Quiet noise in TV studio 20
Rustling leaves in the distance 10
Hearing threshold 0

Operating noise / original sound

In order to get an impression of the real sound, you will find the indication Original sound available Yes/No under Additional information on the product page. If Yes, then you have the possibility to load an mp3 file with the corresponding recording under Downloads. The file name provides information about whether the drive was installed or running at idle, i.e. without load. Under load, the noise changes somewhat, please take this into account.
