connect 24V drives to 230V
There are numerous reasons to operate 24 V drives on 230 V:
- 24V drives can be operated quite easily in tandem or synchronous operation(more on this here)
- Some designs are only available as 24V variants
- Only extra-low voltage should be used at the installation site
- Design and color
- Type of power supply (unregulated, regulated), requirements of the drive regarding voltage quality
However, in these cases a few key points have to be considered. First of all: a 24V power supply without additional parts is not sufficient. The minimum is two additional relays for pole reversal. But one after the other:
24V drives work with a supply voltage of 24V +-10% (SHEV-compatible drives up to +20%). As a rule, the voltage must be connected to the blue and brown wire. These colors have become established over time. In case of doubt, however, please read the corresponding documentation. But I'm sure you do that anyway...
The direction is given by the polarity. So for example plus to brown and minus to blue drives off, vice versa connected the drive drives on again. So if you build a power supply yourself, you have to make sure that the polarity is switched. But you can also use our polarity switching board.
Of course we also offer ventilation power supplies and ventilation control units. If you are wondering what the difference is between ventilation power supplies and ventilation control units, here is the answer:
Ventilation network units
Ventilation power supplies, connected to a 24V drive, act "outwards" like a normal 230V drive. So you connect a blind pushbutton here, which directly supplies 230V for either OPEN or CLOSED. The 230V supply voltage therefore goes to the blind pushbutton and from there to the ventilation power supply unit. A 24V drive is then connected to the ventilation power supply unit.
Ventilation control units
Ventilation control units are connected in a slightly different way: the supply voltage goes directly to the ventilation control unit and supplies it permanently with power. A 24V drive is connected to the central ventilation unit. The button for blinds is also connected to the control panel.
Ventilation control panels usually offer additional functions. For example, the connection of a wind/rain monitor, the possibility to switch the button function to latching, different priority levels of the connected buttons, the possibility to connect thermostats and much more.
What should be considered in the selection process?
- The output current. Of course you can operate several 24V drives in parallel. However, please note the maximum output current, which must not be exceeded. Plan also 10% reserve. If you add up the current consumption of the drives, please use the cut-off current (if specified). This is slightly higher than the rated current.
- Operation. Provided that you "only" want to connect a blind pushbutton, a ventilation power supply is quite sufficient.
- The size. Ventilation power supplies are also available in relatively small sizes.
- The price.
